I know. I’ve been there. I continue to go there, even now.
At some point, the fear of staying within your comfort zone will seem scarier than the fear of stepping outside of it. Perhaps this crossroads is where you’re standing now.
You’ve spent much of your life taking care of others, growing a business or working for others, nurturing a family, participating in community life. And now you feel a shift coming. You’re ready to put your needs first, and right now you need to go somewhere. Alone. To see what you can do by and for yourself.
It has also led me to explore myself more deeply: the fears and insecurities that I’ve lived with all my life; defining my values, needs, and expectations; orienting myself within a larger, global community; and challenging and enriching my relationships.
Each trip has led me to peel back a layer of myself, revealing more of my true self with each trip. My journeys have brought me to myself.
And now I help others find themselves, and find deeper meaning, through solo travel.
I’m not an influencer. I’m a typical midlife woman who often travels solo, and who loves to help other women with their solo travels too.
Although I’ve traveled for years with family and friends, it wasn’t until about ten years ago that I began avidly traveling solo. What happened ten years ago? Change happened. After twenty-something years together, my husband and I divorced. My three children began to leave the nest to build their own futures. I began a new career as a mental health therapist. And I moved.
That’s a lot of transition in a brief period of time.
Something I’d wanted to do, and felt I NEEDED to do, was travel somewhere alone. My first solo trip was a small group trip to Spain and Portugal. It was just what I needed at the time: a mix of independent travel and social interaction. It wasn’t long before I embarked on my first three-month solo trip, consisting of a five-week hiking pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago, followed by six weeks of travel around Spain and Portugal on my own. My life was forever transformed.
I like to get outside my comfort zone by learning something new. One year it was SCUBA diving. This year it’s Spanish.
Hiking keeps me grounded (literally!), with feet on the earth, and it enables me to meet and connect with new people at a slow pace. Plus, I get to see so many beautiful places on this planet!
I love connecting with others. Whether for a brief moment or a lifetime, it’s the presence of others in my life that makes my life richer.
